Repair of Historic Cemetery Walls Completed
October marked the conclusion of a project to repair and rebuild the south and west walls of the historic cemetery on the Pardon Gray Preserve. The north and east walls were rebuilt as part of earlier projects of the Land Trust and the Tiverton Historical Cemetery Commission. The most recent work, completed by Bill Sanford a Tiverton contractor, was funded by private contributions and proceeds from the Rhode Island Foundation specifically earmarked for property management. The cemetery contains seventeen grave markers belonging to Revolutionary War Colonel Pardon Gray, his wife, and other family members. The earliest marker, dated 1759, belongs to the infant, Tillinghast Gray. The cemetery is adjacent to the colonial garden and the beautiful open fields of the Preserve. |
