Campaign for Land Protection - Save It or Lose It
Tiverton is at a crossroads. The rural, scenic and small town character we cherish is giving way to both residential and commercial sprawl, traffic, noise and pollution. Farms, fields and forests are threatened by a building binge unprecedented in Tiverton’s long history. Some have been lost forever. We must act immediately and decisively to protect our unique rural character and natural heritage. The task is urgent. Time is running out. Tiverton has been “discovered.” For these reasons, the Tiverton Land Trust announces the launch of a two year, $2 million dollar campaign for land protection. With substantial resources in the bank, the Trust will have new flexibility to move fast and decisively when attractive purchase and sale agreements are in the offing. The recent acquisition of the 48-acre Pereira parcel is certain to be followed by new opportunities to protect the oak and holly forest as well as land around Nonquit Pond and other strategic, high-value acres. The Trust and its partners, The Nature Conservancy, Tiverton Open Space Commission and RIDEM, are actively engaged in negotiations with several other owners of land in the same unfragmented forest. Where will you be on this Giving pyramid? In the past seven years, the all-volunteer Tiverton Land Trust has protected nearly 300 acres. The Board and other volunteers have invested time and money to protect our heritage for present and future generations. The Board has committed over $30,000 toward the two year campaign. We need your help to raise a sizable war chest of money. Your significant contribution will leverage matching funds from the state and federal governments that the Trust already has in hand. Please join us in the campaign to save Tiverton’s future by making a generous, tax-deductible pledge or contribution to our Land & Natural Resources Protection Fund. The TLT Board is committed to its mission and, with your help, looks forward to the next two challenging and exciting years. Please use the pledge card you can download by clicking here.
